Hebrew studies at Am Echod are based on a Mastery Learning Program. Students move at their own rate for learning how to read, write and speak Hebrew. While lessons are individualized for students, the program encourages grouping of students who work together and encourage one another.
In the lower grades alef, bet and gimmel the curriculum is divided into steps. Students strive for competency in recognizing the letters and vowels. From there they accept the challenge of reading and understanding Hebrew words. With practice and encouragement they begin to read Hebrew text with great fluency. Along the way commonly used words such as colors and numbers are introduced helping to make Hebrew a living language.
For the upper grades daled and hey, blessings and prayers are introduced. In so doing, students possess the necessary knowledge to experience the excitement of becoming active participants at religious services. Eventually the student advances to the study of and chanting of the Torah and Haftarah. Simultaneously, they begin to learn modern Hebrew.
The above is a highly condensed explanation of a complex process. All along the way, students learn the material and are tested before moving to the next level. The objective is to move children along at their individual rate so as to reduce frtustration and increase the level of motivation and success.
